Slow Cooker Buckwheat Porridge: A Naturally Gluten-Free Breakfast
Creamy, comforting and ready when you are, this overnight buckwheat porridge is a wholesome way to start your day. Made using raw buckwheat groats, it's naturally gluten-free, high in fibre and full of slow-release energy.
What is buckwheat porridge?
Unlike traditional oat porridge, buckwheat porridge has a subtle nutty flavour and slightly chewy texture. It’s gentle on the gut and naturally supports a balanced breakfast - it's ideal for busy mornings or those aiming for a less processed start to the day.
Overnight Buckwheat Porridge (serves 2–3)
Ingredients:
100g of raw buckwheat groats (rinsed well)
500ml of a milk of your choice (dairy or plant-based)
1 apple, grated (or mashed banana for extra sweetness)
½ tsp of ground cinnamon
A pinch of salt
Optional: 1–2 tsp maple syrup or honey to taste
Method:
Rinse the groats thoroughly under cold water.
Add all ingredients to your slow cooker and stir.
Cook on low for 6–7 hours overnight (or 2.5–3 hours during the day), until the groats are soft and the texture is creamy.
Stir well and serve warm with your favourite toppings.
Topping ideas:
Sliced banana or berries
A swirl of nut butter
Chopped nuts or seeds
A dash of cold milk or yoghurt
Why buckwheat?
Despite the name, buckwheat isn't wheat - it’s a naturally gluten-free seed, rich in plant protein and prebiotic fibre.
