Christmas Tree Woodlands at Brow Farm

Welcome to Our Regenerative Christmas Tree Woodland

Our Vision

We are transforming part of our woodland into a sustainable, locally grown Christmas tree plantation while maintaining the health and biodiversity of the land. Our approach follows regenerative principles, ensuring that the soil, trees, and surrounding ecosystem thrive together.

The Woodland

The woodland is a mix of oak, birch, and rhododendron, with untouched areas rich in natural biodiversity. We carefully removed invasive rhododendrons and selectively cleared birch trees to create space for our Christmas tree saplings while keeping a natural windbreak in place.

Preparing the Land

Before planting, we worked to ensure the best conditions for our young Nordmann Fir (Abies nordmanniana) saplings:

  • Soil: Naturally acidic peat moss land, well-draining and never cultivated before.
  • Clearing: Removed invasive species while preserving beneficial tree cover.
  • Hand Planting: Using a spade, ensuring minimal soil disturbance.
  • Regenerative Amendments: Johnson-Su compost tea brewed from woodland mulch, rock salt, and molasses to promote microbial life.

The Christmas Trees

  • Species: Nordmann Fir (Abies nordmanniana)
  • Root Type: Bare Root
  • Planted Height: 20/30cm
  • Spacing: 1.7m apart in offset rows for optimal growth and airflow
  • Soil Enrichment: Roots dipped in Johnson-Su tea before planting and dusted with fungal-based powder to enhance symbiosis and nutrient uptake.

Our Regenerative Approach

We are treating this woodland like our farm—working with nature, not against it:

  • Minimal soil disturbance – Hand planting and natural mulching.
  • Biological soil enrichment – Using our Johnson-Su brew to inoculate beneficial fungi and bacteria.
  • No synthetic fertilizers – Encouraging natural soil fertility.
  • Sustainable management – Keeping biodiversity intact while growing trees for future local Christmases.

Follow Our Journey

We are documenting every stage, from clearing the land to planting, treating the roots, and nurturing these trees over the coming years. Check back for updates, photos, and insights into our regenerative woodland project.
